Lesley Johnson's profile

Nassau Brewing Company

A year ago, just before the pandemic arrived, I finished this project for Crowhill Development, a real estate development company that converted what was once the Nassau Brewing Company in Brooklyn, New York, into residential apartments. The company's VP and project lead, Patrick Ciccone, is a passionate architectural preservationist, and wanted to recreate the old signage. I couldn't have been happier when they invited me on board.

As a signpainter with almost a decade under my belt, I've long been admiring the old faded signage on New York's buildings, painted by "wall dogs" a century or more ago.  It's been on my wish list to do just that, and contribute to the cityscape.

Those were cold days, made warmer by some good thermals and the good company of Patrick, who rolled up his sleeves and painted in the outlines, and Caleb, who came in for the second part of the project.
Day is done, job complete...
Being predominantly left-handed, I've gotten into the habit of starting at the end and working backwards so as not to smudge the paint.
Very NAS
That's Patrick!
Watch me pounce! It's more satisfying that popping bubble wrap.
I smile while I'm doing my job....
The chalk powder makes its way through the perforated edges of the lettering, making a clean outline to paint.
6ft of pounce lines
Then we went up 100ft for part II of the project...
